Some general information about oceans

·        Average depth of ocean bed is 3800 mts.
·        Average depth of Pacific Ocean alone is 4300 mts.
·        Average elevation of earth on land surface is 840 mts.
·        Earth's highest point is Mount Everest peak at an elevation of 8850 mts.
·        Earth's deepest point in the ocean is in Marina trench with depth of 10,994 mts. This is in western Pacific Ocean.
·        Average temperature of ocean is 4 degrees centigrade .
·        The average temperature of the ocean surface waters is about 17 degrees centigrade.
·        Ocean waters with an average salinity of 35 ppt (parts per thousand) –  1m3 of sea water weights 1030 to 1070 kg (approximately 1000 kg) this rise to salt content is 35 kg since for 1000 parts salinity is 35 parts.
·        Temperature rise for decade in oceans is 0.3 to 0.4 degrees centigrade/decade.
·        If the whole ice in this world get melted then the sea level rises by 35 mts.
·        Usually, an earthquake has to be over about magnitude 6.75 on the Richter scale for it to produce a destructive tsunami. Only from this intensity upwards is there enough energy released to rapidly displace enough water to create a tsunami.
·        Earthquakes in oceans with Richter scale reading of 9.5 creates a huge tsunami waves with wave height in order of 50 mts or high.
